Our version of a guest book

Our wedding is beach themed or waterfront themed as it will actually take place on the bay and not the ocean. But we are keeping everything beach and water themed and I saw an idea in a wedding magazine at a beach wedding that had a big water jug in place of a guest book. Guests filled out a piece of paper with words of wisdom for the bride and groom and then dropped it into the jug. I saw a really cool glass barrel that I thought would fit in with the theme really well and ordered it. It was pretty pricey but hey...you only get married once, right??? Turns out there is a major problem with the idea....there is no way to get the papers out of the glass barrel! It just has a hole at the top and it will be next to impossible to get the pieces of paper out. I'm wondering now if I should bag the whole idea, do it anyway and potentially never get to read the advice people write or maybe break the barrel afterwards. Hmm...not sure which way I want to go with this. Any ideas on how to get pieces of paper out of a small hole??? LOL...that just sounded strange....

  1. use one of those weird claw grabby things to reach in and pull it out?

  2. How about, just get a hole drilled in the bottom and then plug it like a piggy bank? I'm sure you can find someone. And it would probably be very cheap.

  3. Try using some sort of netting with drawstrings on top. You can put the netting in the barrel first and then pull the drawstrings and work the netting and papers out of the top.

  4. I think you should just leave the notes and words of wisdom in there UNTIL your 10th anniversary or 25th you choose, then break it to read what they say. It can be hopes for the future, tips, whatever. It will be like re-living the wedding day once you open it up to read what was written to you years ago!

  5. If you really can't figure out a way (there are some good ideas here), maybe set a date in the future (Your 1st wedding anniversary, your 10th anniversary?) for you and your hubby to crack the bottle open like an old fashioned piggy bank and read the papers together. It would be something fun/romantic/nostalgic to do. Maybe on your first year anniversary as you sit around and eat your previously frozen wedding cake top.

  6. Whatever you decide..maybe put a disclaimer that you only want words of wisdom from HAPPILY married people lol

  7. If you are going to wait to read the well wishes at some date in the distant future then you should let people know that. If you make it that you are going to read them on your 1st Anniversary then people could make their comments pertain to that & even where they think you'll be in a year (Pregnant, moved to another house, etc.) It could make their comments a little more interesting like-Now that you have your 1st year of marriage behind you, don't you wish you hadn't done it...LOL...OR...Happy 1st Anniversary~I'm so glad that I was able to share the happy day with both of you. BTW I'm sorry the check bounced that I put in your wedding card-money was tight that month. Feel free to redeposit it now...LOL...rather then good luck to the happy couple, best wishes for a happy marriage etc. Just a few thoughts...

  8. I really like the idea of reading the messages on an anniversary, but the idea of BREAKING the barrel and rooting through shards of glass doesn't sound fun! Tongs could work (toast tongs are pretty small). Just insert, tilt the barrel, pinch and remove! I think it's a really cute idea. Don't get discouraged!

  9. Get a different jug!lol

I like what Kris and Lynda said, seems like more fun and a good reason to crack it open later!
